I’ve been on such a summer dress kick lately! For today’s dress I created a ruffle yoke neckline to make a short sleeve shift dress. It was so fun to make. I used this fabric from Fabric.com, which sadly sold out super fast, but this one is similar, as is this one and this one. And I love this one.

[note: I do not provide printable patterns, only the tutorials. I make all my patterns from scratch and this video shows you how to do that!]
First you need to create your pattern. You’ll need a DRESS FRONT (cut on the folded edge so it’s one piece), a DRESS BACK, NECKLINE LININGS for each of these pieces, 2 CAP SLEEVES, and 4 RUFFLE PIECES.
Step 1. As shown in the patterns, you’ll need to cut the yoke off of each DRESS FRONT + BACK piece. Take your DRESS FRONT YOKE and attach the lining with right sides together.
Step 2. Repeat step 1 for the DRESS BACK YOKE pieces and NECKLINE pieces.
Step 3. Take your ruffle pieces and pull them so the top is straight. Since they’re cut in a swirl, pulling them straight will create the nice full ruffles. You’ll need to sew the front ruffle pieces together at the center (not illustrated) to create the half circle. That’s the part that will go across your chest.
Step 4. With right sides of the fabric together, sew the ruffle to the yoke with a straight stitch.
Step 5. Repeat Step 4 for the back yoke pieces.
Step 6. Now take the entire FRONT yoke and ruffle piece and attach it to the rest of the FRONT DRESS piece with right sides together.
Step 7. Repeat Step 6 for the BACK DRESS and BACK yoke and ruffle pieces. Remember, there will be two separate BACK pieces, so attach them separately.
Step 8. Now take your two BACK DRESS pieces and sew them together with right sides together and a straight stitch. [note: the reason we do this as two separate pieces is to create a nice sharp V in the back.]
Step 9. Take your FRONT and BACK DRESS pieces and attach them at the shoulders with a straight stitch and right sides together.
Step 10. Take your cap sleeve and hem it to your desired length.
Step 11. Lay your dress open and flat on the floor, right side of the fabric facing up. Take your cap sleeve with right side down and pin the top to the arm hole. Attach with a straight stitch.
Step 12. With right sides together, sew up your dress pieces with a straight stitch.
Step 13. Hem the dress to your desired length and you’re done!

Hi, do you cut the yoke from the paper pattern or the fabric pattern? If it’s the fabric itself, I’m thinking that in order to attach the ruffles you would need to add some seam allowance to the joke and rest of the dress, right?
And, do you measure your ruffle according to the measurement of the yokes?

How do you make the ruffles?

Are the ruffles cut from circles? What is the diameter of the circle and how wide is the finished ruffle? I love the dress, just trying to figure out how to make it!
Step three shows the shape to cut. Mine were 4 inches wide.
