Building a great wardrobe that fits your style and budget can be a slow process. I wanted to share some tips to build your summer closet, one classic piece at a time.
The question I get asked the most is how to build a good closet with classic pieces that you’ll actually wear. The easiest answer is that classic closets take time to build. I’ve found that breaking it down month by month is an easier process for your wallet!
Here are some closet staples I wear a lot in summer, with shopping options for each.
Summer Closet Staples
5 Closet Staples to Prioritize Buying This Summer
1. White T-Shirt
A white t-shirt is a staple in my closet! The kind of basic that I can wear with a chic midi or maxi skirt, or with a pair of statement pants, or just with basic cut off shorts and a ton of accessories.
My favorite white tee is is this Artizia one – it’s not see through at all, and it has a great slightly boxy, not too cropped shape.
But I’ve linked two other lower priced options below!

2. Classic Dress Up/Down Dress
Every closet needs a dress that you can dress up or down. This new chambray dress is a great option that you could wear with wedges and statement earrings, or you could dress down with a baseball hat and a pair of sneakers.
My dress is a little higher price point, but I linked some other dress up/dress down dresses below at lower price points!
MERRICK WHITE COLLECTION DENIM DRESS ($128, use code MERRICK10 for 10% off) | Under $100 Option | Under $50 Option
3. Denim Shorts
I love a denim short during the summer with a better than basic top, or a basic t-shirt and lots of accessories. I love these Pistola shorts from Evereve, but I also linked a few similar options that are a little lower price point.
EVEREVE PISTOAL SHORTS ($128) | Under $100 Option | Under $50 Option
4. Classic Sandals
Everyone needs a chic, neutral, elevated pair of sandals for summer. I’ve been wearing these Hermes sandals for the last few years and they’re my most worn shoe, but they’re really expensive, so I linked some similar options below for you.
HERMES SANDALS ($690) | Under $60 Option | Under $20 Option
5. Better Than Basic Top
I think every closet needs a “better than basic” or two (or five…). Something that’s nicer than a tshirt or tank, and something you can wear with shorts or also with trousers. I just found this one Target for under $30 and it’s darling!
